I got an upgrade to Painter X, and so I wanted to play around with their new RealBristle brushes, and generally reacquaint myself. I stopped using Painter 9.5 because of issues that are now resolved, so I want to get back into it again!

So I pulled out an old pencil sketch I had done of Sierra's halfling druid "Puny", and played around with it.  Puny is more of a witch doctor than a druid...white haired, wide-eyed and button-nosed, but...well...something just ain't quite all sugar and pie, if you know what I mean.

At this point it's mostly just basic shapes and placement and mood, but I did spend a bit of time on the face learning how to use a bristly brush in layers to get an effect I like.  It was fun! I like the new brushes, though they'd work better if I had Wacom's fancier stylus (which is what they are meant for). I look forward to getting back to this (supposed to be chain mail, and I want there to be earrings and generally just more of a witch-doctor feel), but for the moment I've promised myself to spend more time doing studies and sketches and whatnot, so I just left it at a place I can pick up later.

Surprise Sierra.  Cheesy

Fantastic, I love how very much it seems to be on "one canvas".  One thing thats always difficult for me to like about digital art is that its like green-screened pictures.  Not all of them have it, of course, but so much of it feels like its "floating" and not all on the same plane.

Not this tho, and I <3 it! =)

Hah, it probably seems like that because it is.  Cheesy  Layers are handy things, but you are right, they often create that feeling of disconnect between objects.

Painter helps in that a  little because it has the "pick up colors from layers below" option when you are using brushes that imitate real paint, but it also helps in that the program doesn't handle memory as efficient as PS, so I constantly want to merge layers to save on computer resources. On a complete sidenote ...

If she and Vii were to meet, Vii would probably try and ignore her to begin with, but being intrigued enough to keep an eye out for her ... and eventually, I think Vii would be "corrupted" enough to go and have some fun together with that mischievous little youngster.

Might even give Vii an excuse to play "pirate lady" when they play.
Those two at full tilt would be like an explosion of excuberant playful kittens, methinks.

WTF?  I'm trying to figure out the pirate lady thing. Anker, that was not only a derail, but a derail that Made No Sense (TM).  First rate stuff!  Pirate

I've been further mucking around with Painter, but this time with the old standby of Variable Round in the oils brushes. Well, not my old stand by...seems to be a favorite of others though, and I wanted to figure out the fuss. Now that I've been using it almost consistently in one drawing (something I hope I can post this weekend), I'm seeing why folks like it.  It's a good balance between a simple hard-edged, low-opacity brush of PS and the funkiness of paintlerly-Painter brushes. Aaaand I'm slowly falling back in love with my first love among digital programs. Painter might not handle memory as well as PS, but dang, the brushes just kick ass.  Hamster spin!

Once again I bow to your Color Aptitude   Hail! Hail! Hail!  you are lightyears better that I ever was in the color realm, I was a bit ... Monochromatic - and there's part of me that fondly remembers when you were a wee munchkin and got sick, and I drew pictures for you to color in  Cloud 9 remember?

Who makes your emoticons, anyway? The "Yeah That" one looks very much like something Kael would make, heeheehee

In truth they immigrated here, trough various and sometimes highly illegal means.
Just like boat-immigrants in real life, they braved the dangerous surf-tides and arrived in the dark of the night.

Obviously they cover a large geographical area, from the japanese Ninja, to the caribbean Pirate!

I thought I was going to do something more "pushing the photorealism envelope" with this one, but when my rough blocking-in started to look sorta neat and...storybook-ish...I decided I liked the new direction it was going.  Used a combation of painter's variable round oil and soft oil pastel, and some spackled brushes in PS.  I also was assuming this one would include black chain instead of the cloth, but...again..I just liked it the way it was.

Sierra, if you would fancy any sort of sig/avatar beyond the quick cropping I took, let me know. And it actually looks half-decent at high resolution, so lemme know your screen resolution so I can make you a wallpaper.

Absolutely fantastic. I prefer brushstrokes over the photo-real myself.  My favorite digital artist has this amazing blend of both. She boggles my mind, yes ^^

This is so very alive.  <3
